Creating a CV That Gets You the Right Attention

With so many companies feeling tired of the same CV errors time after time, use our advice to craft one that will give them renewed hope!


Whether we like it or not, HR professionals and businesses are tired of reading the same things and noticing the same mistakes on CVs every single day. Rather than being sifted straight into the bin when you apply for a job, take our advice and revamp your CV so that you can shine.

Create a Personal Statement Under 100 Words

The first thing that appears on your CV is your personal statement, and it should be the part that helps employers get a grasp on who you are, what you offer and how you are better than the competition. The best statements are less than one hundred words in length and offer a clear and concise overview of who you are.


Include the Right Information

Many candidates forget to add all the required information to their CVs and are then missed out when it comes to shortlisting. Don’t let this happen to you by ensuring that you include:

  • Your personal details
  • Your work history
  • Your education, including grades
  • Your achievements
  • Your hobbies and interests


Use Meaningful Keywords

Many people now use keywords on their CV to give the recruiter an idea of your attributes without adding too much waffle that is not needed. When you are considering keywords, try to limit it to

around six words and make sure they are all tangible rather than descriptive. Use your achievement and work history section to back up any specific words that you choose to use.


Avoid Clichés

No one is ever going to tell a prospective employer that they are lazy, so adding comments about being hardworking is pointless and takes up valuable space. It is easy to get sucked into sharing overused clichés when you are keen to get a job, but these can be off-putting and come across as generic rather than personal so avoid them at all costs!


Format Professionally

Any formal application or CV should always look the part too. Avoiding swirling fonts or verbose language is a step in the right direction and will help you to get your CV read by the recruitment team. Pick a clear font and lay your CV out in a logical way, using chronological order for work and education history. When you have finished, make sure that you proofread it so that there are no errors or mistakes that could cost you the chance of being shortlisted.


Update it for Every Application

Finally, make sure that you take the time to check your CV for every application you send. This does not mean rewriting it in full but considering your keywords and how you have written about your experience in relation to the job you are applying for will help you offer a more personalised application.
