Senior Instrumentation Technician

Location: Salisbury Plain, South of Devizes, Wiltshire
Contract: Permanent
Hours: 37 hours per week, Monday to Friday
Salary: £38,655 – £46,492 per annum

The Role

I have been instructed to recruit an experienced Senior Instrumentation Technician to join our prestigious client based on the Salisbury Plain, south of Devizes.

This is a highly technical and varied role, responsible for planning and delivering instrumentation solutions for explosive and ballistic trials, capturing and analysing high-quality data, and ensuring specialist equipment is maintained, calibrated and operated safely.

As Senior Instrumentation Technician, you will provide specialist technical expertise across the full instrumentation and data-capture process.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Planning and evaluating instrumentation requirements for explosive and ballistic trials.
  • Providing specialist technical advice on appropriate and achievable data collection techniques.
  • Selecting, sourcing and preparing specialist instrumentation and associated consumables.
  • Planning and executing the deployment of instrumentation on the range.
  • Operating, maintaining and troubleshooting a wide range of specialist instrumentation equipment.
  • Acting as the first point of contact for instrumentation, data collection and equipment issues.
  • Protecting instrumentation and valuable equipment from environmental conditions and the effects of trials.
  • Assessing and analysing raw data captured during trials.
  • Processing and presenting data for customer reports and technical documentation.
  • Editing and formatting high-speed video footage for use in reports and presentations.
  • Maintaining, calibrating and servicing specialist instrumentation equipment.
  • Liaising with instrumentation manufacturers and external suppliers.
  • Supporting trial planning and providing rapid assessments of data gathered.
  • Creating and maintaining operating procedures and Health & Safety documentation for new equipment.
  • Monitoring instrumentation costs and supporting the development of fully costed trial plans.

The position also carries important site responsibilities, including nominated Health & Safety management, radiation protection and armoury responsibilities, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation, procedures and safety standards.

About You

We are looking for a technically capable and practical individual who enjoys problem-solving and working with specialist instrumentation and data capture equipment.

You will ideally have: 

  • An HND or degree in a relevant technical/scientific subject, or be currently working towards one.
  • Substantial technical experience in data capture and instrumentation.
  • Experience of working with specialist technical equipment and resolving complex technical problems.
  • Experience within explosive trials or a related defence/testing environment would be advantageous.
  • A strong understanding of scientific and technical principles gained through qualifications and/or practical experience.
  • Excellent technical problem-solving skills.
  • Strong planning, organisational and supervisory abilities.
  • The ability to work independently, use initiative and take responsibility for delivering work to a high standard.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when capturing, processing and presenting technical data.
  • Good IT skills, including Microsoft Office, email, internet and database applications.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • The ability to manage multiple priorities and remain effective when working under pressure.
  • A flexible and adaptable approach, with the confidence to work both independently and as part of a wider team.
  • A strong commitment to Health & Safety, quality and customer service.
