As we move into the second quarter of 2026, the South West HR market has transitioned from a focus on senior strategic leadership back toward Operational Delivery and Specialist Partnerships. The high-level vacancies that defined late March have largely been filled, making way for a wave of roles focused on Employee Relations and Shared Services.
Specialist Partnering: A new and significant trend is the rise of sector-specific partnerships, such as the HR Shared Services Partner for Hamwic Education Trust (Dorset Council). This highlights a move toward collaborative HR models across the public and education sectors.
Employee Relations (ER) Focus: New senior roles like the HR Business Partner (Employee Relations) and People Partnership Lead suggest that businesses are currently prioritising internal harmony and structured partnership models.
School Leadership: The Interim Head of HR Support at Westonbirt Schools represents a niche but important senior interim opportunity in the independent education sector.
Operational Management: The arrival of HR Manager and HR Operations Manager roles indicates that businesses are staffing up to manage the delivery of the strategies set earlier in the year.
The senior strategic “peaks” of late March have officially been cleared.
Strategic Leadership Filled: Major roles like the Head of Resourcing (NHS Bath), Senior People and Culture Lead (Tate Recruitment), and Strategic HR Business Partner are now off the market.
Senior Specialist Fills: The Senior Human Resources Business Partner (£75k-£80k) and Senior Human Factors Engineer roles have also been removed, along with the Health & Safety Technical Manager role at NatWest.
Interim Shift: The Senior HR Case Advisor and several Fixed Term Contract (FTC) partner roles have closed as organisations have finalised their support structures for the new financial year.
While senior roles are seeing targeted interest, advisory positions remain the most contested area of the market.
Advisory Leaderboard: The HR Advisor role at Griffith Foods (Wincanton) continues to be a major hotspot, now reaching 123 applicants.
Early Career Interest: The HR Advisor – Year in Industry at Airbus Protect has already hit its initial cap of applicants, showing strong demand for entry-level professional development.
Public Sector Demand: The HR Shared Services Partner for Dorset Council has seen immediate traction, matching the volume of established commercial roles in its first few days.
