The chief information officer (CIO) is a C-level executive role responsible for the people, processes and technology within an organisation’s IT department. When the position first emerged in the 1980s, IT was commonly seen as something separate and distinct for everything else within an organisation. Today, IT is at the heart of operations, which is why this C-suite executive role is so important.
Managing the technology for an entire company is a formidable task that requires a strong leader with a solid understanding of how IT systems work. Some companies choose to combine this role with the Chief Technology Officer role to give one person greater oversight, while others will want to see these 2 individuals working closely together.
To succeed in this role, a person needs to be well versed in information technology, including past, present and future solutions. They need to have their finger on the pulse of the latest developments to ensure they can stay ahead of the curve.
They also need to be an effective leader and able to inspire individuals at all levels of the organisation to use the IT provisions available to them in order to increase productivity.
