The National Living Wage is set to rise by 6.6 per cent from the 1st April 2022, rising from its current rate of £8.91 per hour.
Alongside the NLW increase there will be significant rises in National Minimum Wage (NMW) rates for younger workers.
The below graph displays the current 2021 minimum wage and the new rate set to be introduced in 2022 alongside percentage increase.
The LPC’s “central projections” suggested the national living wage would actually need to increase to £9.58 in 2022 and £10.70 in 2024 to reach two-thirds of median wages but this approach was “front-loaded” and not the right approach in the current economic circumstances.
Nonetheless, Rishi Sunak states that the rise of National Living Wage still “ensures we’re making work pay and keeps us on track to meet our target to end low pay by the end of this Parliament.”
