Have you recently been shortlisted for the job you want & are now having second thoughts because it’s via video call? Fear not – we’ve got the advice you need!
Before 2020, video interviews were used sporadically in the business world, with more employers choosing face to face interviews as their preference. However, with the recent world events, we have now seen a huge shift to video interviews being the first choice for companies. If you have been invited to a video interview and feel daunted at the prospect, then do not give up – we have some handy hints and tips that will get you feeling more confident than ever before.
Take the Call in a Quiet and Well Lit Area
An interview is a formal process, so it is vital that you locate yourself somewhere you won’t be disturbed. Make sure anyone in your house knows that you are interviewing and put a sign on your door so that no one comes in unannounced.
Log In Before the Start Time
Make sure you are logged in and ready to go about 10 – 15 minutes before the interview begins so that you have time to resolve any camera or microphone issues first. Most video conferences have a virtual waiting room so that you won’t be instantly connected to the interviewer as you perform your checks.
Avoid Moving Around Too Much
When you start the interview, avoid moving around too much as the camera cannot follow you. Instead, try to keep still and only use gesticulation where absolutely necessary as this will help the interviewer maintain their focus on your answers.
Be Aware of Potential Time Delays
While the internet and video conference calls have come a long way, there is always a chance that you may have a couple of seconds delay. Make sure that you are aware of this so that you do not interrupt the interviewer if they are in mid-question.
Show You are Confident By Making Eye Contact
Finally, just because you are on a screen, it does not mean that you can’t make eye contact. Smile, be friendly and make sure your computer is set up so that you can look directly at the person or people that are interviewing you.
Why Video Interviews Are Great
Now you know how to handle your video interview, why don’t you take a moment to think about all the positive aspects that video interviews have to offer? For example, a video interview can save you the hassle of having to travel and take a full day off work when you can just schedule your call at a time that works with your diary.
Plus, if you are working with a recruiter, a video interview gives you both the opportunity to get to know one another better, allowing them to find you more personalised jobs to go for.
